The Non-Lucrative Visa is still the main door for retirees who are not EU citizens, and its income floor is tied to a number that moves every year: the IPREM (Indicador Público de Renta de Efectos Múltiples). For 2026, the IPREM sits at roughly EUR 600 a month / EUR 7,200 a year, and the NLV asks for 400% of the annual figure for the main applicant — about EUR 28,800 a year, or EUR 2,400 a month — plus 100% of annual IPREM per dependent, another EUR 7,200 a year (EUR 600/month) each. A retired couple should budget close to EUR 36,000 a year in provable, passive, non-work income before a consulate will look twice at the file. Because IPREM is reset annually, treat this year's figure as the number to re-verify the month you file, not a fact to bank on twelve months out.

The income test is stricter on source than amount

Consulates want to see that the income is passive — pensions, rental income, investment distributions, dividends — not freelance or remote-employment earnings, which the NLV explicitly does not permit. Bank statements alone rarely satisfy an examiner; pair them with pension award letters, brokerage statements, or property lease agreements that make the income's recurring nature obvious on paper. A lump sum sitting in a savings account reads differently to an examiner than a documented monthly pension deposit, even if the total is identical.

Health insurance without a co-pay, and why that phrase matters

Private health insurance is mandatory, and Spanish consulates have become specific about the policy terms: it must be full coverage with no co-payments (sin copago) and no waiting periods, sold by a company authorized to operate in Spain. Budget EUR 80–150 a month for a policy that clears this bar for someone in their 60s or 70s — older applicants and pre-existing conditions push that range up, and a policy that looks cheap because it carries a deductible or excess will be rejected outright, not flagged for clarification. Buy the policy after confirming with the specific consulate handling your application that the insurer is on their accepted list; acceptance varies by consulate more than agents like to admit.

Where the money goes further

The Canary Islands consistently undercut the mainland on housing: a comfortable three-bedroom runs roughly EUR 900–1,400 a month, helped by a milder, more stable climate that avoids the humid Mediterranean summer spike. Valencia sits in the EUR 1,100–1,700 range with a livelier expat and healthcare infrastructure but stickier summer humidity. The Costa del Sol, the traditional British retirement belt around Málaga and Marbella, runs EUR 1,200–1,800 for the same footprint — the premium buys density of English-speaking services, private clinics used to foreign patients, and direct flight links home, which matters more once you are actually managing a chronic condition from abroad rather than reading about the region on a forum.

The renewal clock and the work restriction

The NLV is renewed after one year, then again for two-year periods, with permanent residency typically available at the five-year mark. Renewal re-checks the same income test using the IPREM figure current at renewal time, so a couple whose pension income does not track inflation can find the bar has effectively risen under them. The visa's core restriction — no local employment or self-employment — is enforced; if you plan to consult, freelance, or work remotely for a foreign employer once you're settled, the Non-Lucrative Visa is the wrong instrument and Spain's separate digital nomad visa is the one to compare it against instead.
