Glasgow's one-bedroom average sits close to £900 a month, with a typical range of roughly £800-1,150 — genuinely cheaper than Edinburgh, and noticeably so once you're outside the West End, which carries its own premium for proximity to the university and the city's strongest concentration of cafes and independent shops. Glasgow's creative-industries and startup scene has real momentum, and the city's student population keeps a steady churn of rental stock moving, which can work in your favor if you're flexible on exact neighborhood and timing.

NHS Scotland, IHS, and the surcharge you still owe

NHS Scotland is free at the point of use once you're legally resident — but getting there still means paying the UK-wide Immigration Health Surcharge, £1,035 per year of visa validity per adult, upfront as part of your visa application, same as anywhere else in the UK. Scotland's devolved government funds and runs its own NHS board structure, but it does not set or waive the IHS, which is a UK Home Office charge tied to your immigration status, not a Scotland-specific health fee.
