Most people planning a UK move start by googling "UK visa requirements" and land on outdated numbers, because the Skilled Worker salary floor moved substantially in July 2025 and most guides haven't caught up. Skilled Worker: the route most people actually use

The general salary floor is £41,700 a year or 100% of the job's specific "going rate," whichever is higher — and the going rate matters more than the headline number, because it's set per occupation code from median UK earnings data (ASHE), not a flat bar. A software developer role, for instance, has a going rate well above the general floor, currently cited around £49,400 — so "I clear £41,700" doesn't automatically mean you clear the bar for your specific job code. This threshold took effect from July 2025 and has meaningfully narrowed which roles can sponsor at all, pushing lower-paid positions out of the sponsorship system entirely. Check your exact SOC/occupation code's going rate on gov.uk before assuming an offer qualifies — a job title that sounds senior can still sit under a going rate you haven't checked.

The other doors: Global Talent, Health and Care, and BN(O)

Global Talent has no fixed salary threshold at all — it's endorsement-based, built for people in academia, research, arts, and tech who can get an approved body to vouch for their standing in the field, and it's worth investigating before defaulting to employer sponsorship if you have a genuine case for it. The Health and Care Worker visa serves the NHS and adjacent care sector with its own, generally lower salary bar than standard Skilled Worker — relevant if you're coming through the healthcare licensing route covered in our nurse and doctor abroad guide. British National (Overseas) status remains a distinct route for eligible Hong Kong BN(O) holders and their family members, running on its own criteria entirely separate from employer sponsorship — don't conflate it with Skilled Worker eligibility if you hold BN(O) status.

The Immigration Health Surcharge is a real annual line item

Every visa route requiring more than six months' stay carries the Immigration Health Surcharge: £1,035 per year of granted leave for adults, £776 per year for under-18s, students, and Youth Mobility Scheme participants. This is paid upfront for the full length of your visa grant, not monthly — a five-year Skilled Worker visa means over £5,000 in IHS alone, due at application, on top of the visa fee itself. Budget it as a lump sum before you file, not as something you'll figure out later.

London rent versus everywhere else

A one-bedroom in London commonly runs £1,800-2,800 depending on zone and borough, while Manchester — the most-cited alternative for tech and finance roles outside the capital — sits closer to £1,000-1,500. That gap is large enough to change your effective salary meaningfully: a £45,000 offer in Manchester buys a materially different lifestyle than the same offer in London, where rent alone can eat a third of take-home pay before council tax, transport, and the IHS lump sum are even factored in. Weigh the job market depth against the rent gap honestly — London still has the deepest sponsorship pipeline for finance, law, and much of tech, but it's not the only city sponsoring Skilled Worker visas anymore.
